PDF Print

Maths week 2018 is being celebrated in Holy Family School this year with many activities planned for all classes.  The events of Maths Week were designed to present Maths as interesting, challenging and yet rewarding  -  and  yes even fun!

Our PE hall is transformed this week to ‘The Hall of Number’! All pupils have an opportunity to take part as there are activities for all mathematical abilities.

Principal Ed O’ Brien is very impressed by the enthusiasm that exists for Maths among the staff and pupils of Holy Family School.  Holy Family School is committed to the promotion of STEM and will also participate in the VEX Robotics Programme in the coming year.

Thanks to Brigid Crowley, Head of Computing Dept. IT Tralee  and John Walsh Lecturer IT Tralee,  the pupils of Holy Family School can now enjoy VEX Robotics.  This is an exciting and fun programme where school children from 8 - 18 years of age learn about Science Technology Engineering & Maths (STEM) while having fun!

VEX bring STEM skills to llife by tasking teams of students with designing and building robots to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge.  Classroom STEM concepts are put to the test as students learn lifelong skills in teamwork, leadership, communications and more.

Holy Family School boasts children from 19 different countries, so there was so much to learn for both pupils and staff during our Culture Week.  An explosion of colour, great music and tasty food from Poland, Lithuania, Syria, Chinese dishes to name but a few, was on show on June, 6th, 7th & 8th.  EAL teacher, Ms. Breen organised projects with the pupils which included items from Africa, China, other parts of Asian and Eastern Europe.  All classes participated in zumba, pipe band, Irish dancing, traditional Irish music, mindfulness and drumming workshops throughout the week.  Infant class were also treated to a puppet show. Many families dressed in traditional dress on Friday.  Thanks to Mrs. Dempsey, Ms. Breen and all staff for making this week such an enjoyable week for all and a great way to learn about other cultures.

From once Patrick McCarthy and Darragh O' Hanlon entered the classroom they had the pupils attention.  They had very well organised lessons, were very prepared and very energetic during the classes.  The pupils reacted very well to all four lessons and learned a huge amount about healthy eating, nutrition and the importance of exercise.
